Frequently Answered Questions
Can I try a class before I commit?
Of course. We offer a free one hour orientation to learn the basics and get to know your individual needs. Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early to go through the moves with your trainer. This is open to first time visitors only.
What equipment do I need?
You don't need anything. We have gloves on hand for you to use while you're here. If you join, you'll probably want your own personal pair. We have them available for purchase. A flat sole gym shoe, such as wrestling shoe, is recommended..
What should I wear or bring?
Come ready to workout! We have restrooms available if you need to change, but not locker rooms. Sweats and T-shirt work best, and we recommend that you bring a towel and a bottle of water.
How early should I arrive for a class?
Members should arrive 10 minutes early in your workout wear and ready to go. You'll need the extra time to get your hands wrapped and your gloves on. Visitors should arrive 15 minutes early to check in with a manager before starting the class.
What are the classes like?
The classes have a limit of twenty participants. Small Group classes, Semi Private, and Private sessions are scheduled in advance. Each class lasts one hour and varies in intensity and style—but all share a common thread—intensive full body training. You will never get hit in a fitness class—but you will hit and kick heavy bags.
The ideal over- all bag class would consist of a 10 minute warm up and a short rehearsal of the movements that we will be using in the aerobic and bag section. Air reps of slow controlled 4 count kicks using a repetition reduction drill, for 4 to 6 different kicks will typically follow. Practicing form and isolations, continued movement rehearsals in shadow boxing. We will spend the remainder of class on bag work with active rest intervals, followed by mediation movement focusing on relaxed flow, than a final stretch.
Does a person have to be in perfect physical shape?
Many members are overweight and out of shape when they join, but our training will get you in good shape in a short time. If you have heart problems or other limitations, consult your doctor. We will custom design a program for you, working directly with your physician at no added cost.
Does the physical training include weights or machines?
Some weight training may be recommended or used, but most of the resistance training comes from the inherent isotonic, aerobic, anaerobic and isometric exercises which are meant to get a person into super condition as they lose weight quickly and tone up the whole body. The focus of our physical training is the speed advantage – instead of bulk, you’ll develop speed, flexibility and force.
What makes your kickboxing program different from others?
They're all good, as long as the instructor teaches safety techniques and is motivating. If you're not hitting a bag that's got the proper resistence, such as a foam or water based interior, you won't get the proper bone density feedback needed in order to realistically be able to throw a deadly strike. See why our bags are the best in the world. What we strive for is giving a safe, fun but serious class. We incorporate real useful skills and movements that provide not only physical results but enhance motor movement, improve brain function, and have real life self defense purpose. Here's why we use heavy bag training at Smash Hit.
By far, Kickboxing training is the most efficient and effective art form.. In other words, we teach only the techniques that really work and are practical in a modern defense situation. They’re exciting and easy to learn, easy to execute, and are effective every time.
"There are many types of martial arts and kickboxing workouts having similarities and purpose. . From the late 80’s until present, I taught thousands of classes. I found shadow boxing worked well for over all fitness aerobic conditioning, and was motivating with great music and comradery of participants, but people did not have focus and real martial intent. What was needed was traditional equipment to provide real feedback or the movements and skills. Once one starts with the traditional floor work and the true science of kickboxing they will get more out each and every workout. The heavy bag training hones and develops safe execution of thousands of punches and kicks per class providing focused accuracy and resistive feedback for muscle power and endurance. Later when you return to a shadow boxing segment you are 100% more effective. "
How often should I do the workout?
If you are busy once a week is enough to build your over all endurance and capability to implement the basic moves, while improving physical and mental fitness. Within 4 to 8 weeks you will be able to demonstrate dozens of moves stances, and concepts. After this time I would increase the amount of intensity and frequency of the work out. The good thing about this is you can do it at home with investing in a heavy bag for home or office. The key to all our training is to go at your own pace.
